I just finished an adult ed class here at SOU on the short stories of John Cheever, and was having some of the same problems: lines and even paragraphs to weep for, but stories, as total package, that left me chilled and/or blank. Occasionally peeved, too, when Cheever cut loose in a more misogynist vein. The experience was heightened by contrast with my simultaneous re-reading of THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV, which is the Real Deal altogether, IMHO.

A continuation of the problem of the Lost Generation writers, many of whom were outstanding at crafting a novel, but often flopped out like a fish when it came to providing meaning at the end of the reading experience. But they were a continuation of the Romantics, n'est-ce pas? There's a Chesterton footnote here somewhere....

There are some very common threads with our experience in RC. My husband worked for the Legion in a school and the LC wanted the school chaplain to give him spiritual direction. The chaplain was also on the board of directors and my husband reported directly to the board. He felt very trapped and when he told the LC his concerns, they flew an LC priest in from another city every month for his direction. When we spoke with our Archbishop he thought this was very odd given the fact that there were many qualified priests in the diocese that could give direction. The Bishop also thought it was an interesting way to spend their funds. Little did he know the control and manipulation that was afoot.

To Former LC priest:I think there may be a misunderstanding, which happens from time to time. So to clarify:1 - I am on record on several occasions as stating I believe the victims of Fr. Maciel. I have even met with some of them.2 - My comment about victims of sexual abuse thinking with a different part of their brain is something that was explained me by psychologists who worked with victims of clerical sexual misconduct. As they were reputable psychologists, I of course believe them.3 - By pointing this out, I am not seeking to downplay accusations put forward by victims of Fr. Maciel. Nor am I trying to excuse or explain away Fr. Maciel's sins. Rather, this comment was directed to LC/RC members - both past and present - who struggle with some minor discrepancies that may have appeared in the original accusations against Fr. Maciel. Simply put, these minor discrepancies are not uncommon. I have encountered them with other victims of sexual abuse.
